How do I help a friend or family member get help?

Charity Together offers support and resources to those who are struggling with substance abuse. We understand that this healing takes dedication and time. We are here to  help.

What is a halfway house?

A halfway house is a transitional living facility where people can temporarily live as a part of their substance rehab aftercare.  People in halfway houses have completed inpatient or outpatient programs and medical supervision is no longer needed.  Halfway homes offer a middle step for those  who are committed to sober living, but are not quite ready to do so on their own. Halfway homes provide social interaction with those who are also going through their sobriety journey. A major major benefit of a halfway house is that they are a substance free environment to help readjust to life outside of treatment.  Depending on your needs, you can live in a halfway house for a few weeks or several months.

Each facility has their own set of rules, but  common rules for residents of halfway houses are:

  • Remain sober
  • Attend house meetings
  • Adhere to a curfew
  • Attend a 12-step or similar program
  • Submit to random drug and/or alcohol testing
  • Respect the property and space of other residents and staff members
  • Avoid fighting with other residents
  • Seek and obtain employment

What does it mean to detox?

When someone had a drug or alcohol addiction, the first important step in recovery is to go through a detoxification process. Detox is when alcohol or drugs are removed from the body, which will ensure that a person is ready and physically stable to start a rehab program and therapy. The time it will take to detox varies person to person and is also dependent on  the levels of substance in their body.

To detox "cold turkey" can be very dangerous and should be evaluated by a medical professional. The most severe withdrawal symptoms include hallucinations, delirium and seizures. There  may be other unpleasant psychological and physical symptoms, known as withdrawal symptoms.

Psychological symptoms may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Paranoia
  • Depression
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Intense cravings for substances

Physical symptoms include:

  • Shaking and shivering
  • Sweating
  • Runny nose
  • Increased heart rate and/or blood pressure
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Vivid and unpleasant dreams

People going through detox should be closely monitored, during the detoxification process for around the clock support. When this process is completed, patients will be ready to start a rehab program.

Rehabilitation, or rehab , is a  process of multiple therapies crafted to individuals to help get those in need get back to a sober life and lifestyle.    The two main types of options are outpatient and  inpatient rehab facilities, ranging from basic to luxury treatment centers.

How does my insurance cover costs?

Health insurance typically covers substance abuse rehabilitation. Your insurance policy coverage benefits may determine the type of care, provider and location of treatment.  They may be an out-of- pocket expense, and it may differ if the rehab is out of state. It is recommend to check with your insurance provider before entering into a treatment facility so that the details of what is and what is not covered is understood. Another way of finding out answers to what insurances will cover would be to talk to staff at the addiction treatment facilities. Charity Together will assist in seeking treatment centers and providers who are in network with your insurance.

If applicable, Charity Together has financial aid to help make it so that finances are not a barrier to getting the help that is needed.  Please contact us if you are in need of financial assistance.
